Features and functions
In the course of the process, I tried, tested, discarded and retested various technical concepts.
Before I have my first VR experience in 2024, at the “Digital Week”, I basically rejected this idea.
In the meantime, I use the Meta Quest 3 and have redefined the objective and description for the program:
Phase 1: (by the end of 2024)
- In an immersive VR application, users can move freely in different buildings: Kiel Franciscan monastery, various residential buildings.
- The entire old town island: with the market, the historic streets and buildings can be explored.
- All program parts have a modular structure, can be flexibly expanded and corrected, and new sources can be integrated.

- Languages: German, English, French, Danish, Low German and Latin.
- If or as soon as appropriate sources are available, all buildings, artifacts, crafts, music, etc. are historically accurate.
All sources are linked in the program and can be displayed. - When using AI, there are corresponding hints: languages, etc.
- The daily routine can be adjusted (for example, 24 hours are displayed in 240 minutes): sunrise and sunset, prayer times in the monastery, start and end of the craftsmen’s work, seasons, special historical events, etc.
Phase 2: (starts in 2025)
- Integration of interactive learning modules: language, history, music and others.
- Integration of interactive artefacts – which are not directly related to the history of Kiel, but represent the time: book art with concrete examples etc.
- Historical reconstruction of the Kiel area: villages, monasteries, etc.
